All eyes were focused on Lockport NY, Saturday April 14th for the highly anticipated undisputed Championship Kickboxing event.

Abdallah (12-0) made the first defense of his coveted title against the durable and hard hitting TJ Gibson of Duluth, Minnesota. Gibson, who fluctuates from light heavyweight up to heavyweight proved he was worthy of the challenge and endured a 10 round war with Abdallah.

From the opening bell, Abdallah controlled the distance and pace landing solid blows that kept Gibson from landing any solid shots.

Early in the second round Abdallah unleashed a devastating left roundhouse kick to Gibsons temple, followed by a right cross that sent the Minnesota native nearly to the mat before referee Joe Pagan stepped in and issued an 8 count. Abdallah continued the assault, but the durable Gibson showed Western New York why he has never been stopped in his career. Going into the fight, we knew he was durable and strong. I was hoping to be the first to stop him, but I tip my hat off to TJ. He took a lot of hard shots and proved he was game. Abdallah stated.

In the middle rounds Gibson began pressuring Abdallah by attempting to close the gap and land big shots to end the fight. Abdallahs experience, defense and superb counter punching made it difficult for Gibson to land the big shot he was looking for.

In the final round, Abdallah was way ahead on all 3 judges score cards but came out to finish Gibson. The hardest shot of the fight landed on Gibsons chin in the form of a right uppercut that spun the former Heavyweight world champion around only to meet a kick from Abdallah that landed flush on his chin.

To the amazement of the standing room only crowd, Gibson held on and was saved by a stop in the action due to referee Joe Pagan having to fix the tape on Abdallahs glove. After 10 rounds of exciting world class kickboxing, Amer Abdallah was awarded a unanimous decision victory and retained his United States national title. When asked for a comment, Abdallah said Im so proud to be able to represent Western New York and keep this national title here. This victory is shared not only by me and my team, but by this entire community.

Chicagos gamethe sport of 16-inch slow-pitch softballjust turned 125 years old, so its time to honor the great history and players at the 16th annual Chicago 16-Inch Softball Hall of Fame induction event on April 14th.

Softball was born as an indoor sport in 1887 at the Farragut Boat Club at 31st Street and Lake Park Avenue on Chicagos South Side. About 20 club members were gathered in the gymnasium of the clubhouse on Thanksgiving Day to follow via telegram the progress of the annual Harvard-Yale football game.

A combination of good spirits and empty time on their hands resulted in one of the young members picking up a stray boxing glove and tossing to another member who with a stick batted at it, noted Robert Pruter, Illinois High School Association historian.

George Hancock, an inspired spectator, decided to make a formal game out of the hijinks. Hancock drew a baseball diamond on the gym floor, tied up the laces around the boxing glove to form a sphere and the players swatted it with a broomstick.

Hancock outlined a rough set of rules, and for the remainder of the evening the members played Indoor Baseball. The game caught on and by the end of the winter the Farragut team was playing indoor baseball with other clubs.

Softball developed into an outdoor sport in the 1920s, and 16-inch slow-pitch was the perfect game for the Windy Citys blue-collar ethnic inner-city neighborhoods and small parks to play in. To play the game, all a kid needed was a bat and an over-stuffed softball, sometimes called the mush ball. No expensive glove was required.

And, that wasand still isthe beauty of Chicagos game, which flourished on makeshift diamonds in the streets, vacant lots, school yards, parking lots, prairies and under the el tracks from Rogers Park to Mount Greenwood long before it ascended to the green grass of the citys public parks.

The Hall of Fame honors both men and womenplayers, historic teams, organizers, managers and umpireswho since the 1920s have excelled at their craft, provided thrills and memories and have set the benchmark for future generations, said Ron Kubicki, president of the Hall of Fame.

The 16th annual induction ceremony and awards dinner is scheduled to be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 14nd at Drury Lane Theater & Conference Center in Oakbrook Terrace.

This year, the event will also recognize Lane Tech College Prep High School for winning Chicago Public Leagues 16-Inch Softball Championships, the school has nine titles in 13 years.

The wheelchair World Series champions, the Rehabilitation Institute Cubs, also will be honored.

The first 15 Hall of Fame events have attracted more than 9,000 guests. The Hall of Fame will induct 17 individuals and five historic teams at this years event.

It is always a wonderful night to congratulate the winners and network with past friends, teammates and competitors, said Maag, who noted that more than 600 people are expected to attend the awards event.

Each year it gets tougher reviewing nominations, but when the dust settles the crop of stellar players and supporters of our game is always impressive. This year is not exception, noted Kubicki.

Smoke, a B-saloon team with a 25-year history of winning championships in leagues from Shabbona Park to Skokie, Elmhurst and Villa Park, will be inducted in the Historic Team category. Stars of Smoke are pitcher Gary S. Goldberg,

and outfielders Chuck Martinkus and Larry Comstock.

Today, Comstock, 60, is a fine hitter with good hands who still plays competitive softball with Vintage Risk and wonders how he has survived four decades in the game. Ive experienced so many mallet fingers and torn ligaments in softball games Ive lost count, Comstock said. His motto: If you get hurt, put some tape on it.

One colorful inductee from the 1950-1960 Era is Lou Vine, a fleet outfielder who played for the Rogues and many other fine teams at Clarendon Park and Kelly Park. Handsome and blond in his youth, Vine always took his uniform to an Italian tailor to have it altered, teammates recalled. The first 10 road trips have been published on the state tourism website http://www.100RoadTrips.com and include a romantic getaway in Mobile, Gulf Coast Beaches, a downtown Birmingham walking tour, an adventure at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and the To Kill A Mockingbird experience in Monroeville. One hundred road trips will be published over the three-year campaign. Visitors are encouraged to frequent the website for the addition of new road trips.

Alabama Food

The Alabama Tourism Departments multi-year campaign kicked off in January 2012 and will run through 2014. The campaign includes special events such as the first statewide Restaurant Week and a BBQ Sauce contest. The brochure 100 Dishes to Eat In Alabama Before You Die was update with more than 30 new listings. A statewide BBQ is scheduled to launch in 2013.

What started as a simple creative endeavor for Palm Springs-artist Charley Akers has turned into a tribute to Festival of Arts artists with a Photo-Illustrative Exhibit that will be unveiled May 15 at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel. Five-time national driving champion Scott Tucker joined Level 5 Motorsports teammates Christophe Bouchut and Joao Barbosa on the top step of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón P2 podium in the historic Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by Fresh from Florida, winning Americas oldest endurance race for the third consecutive year following its dominating performance.

The ALMS P2 class victory for the No. 055 Alpina Watches-sponsored Honda Performance Development ARX-03b didnt come without its challenges. An accident in qualifying meant the David Stone-led team had to pull an all-nighter to get its prototype ready for the season-opening race.

While it was Level 5s No. 95 HPD of Tucker, Luis Diaz and Ryan Hunter-Reay that paced the opening stages of the race, an error by a GTC Porsche in the fourth hour knocked the IndyCar star out of the lead and ultimately led to an early end for the teams second entry.

All hopes of a repeat P2 victory turned to the rebuilt No. 055 car, which started from the rear of the grid due to a tire change and the overnight rebuild. An impressive quadruple stint by Tucker, however, saw the defending P2 champion move up to second in the ALMS class before handing over to Bouchut and Barbosa to complete the driving duties.

Both drivers also enjoyed time out front, often ahead of the entire WEC LMP2 field. While Barbosa battled tooth-and-nail with the Starworks Motorsport prototype for the overall LMP2 lead, the focus was clearly on taking top ALMS honors, which Level 5 accomplished in convincing fashion. The No. 055 HPD of Tucker, Bouchut and Barbosa finished 21 laps clear of the competition in its class.

Our team is very happy, Tucker said after the race. It was a great effort by everybody. To get a top-five finish overall and winning the ALMS class and mixing it in the WEC battle is really incredible. This is our third straight win at Sebring, which makes me real proud of the entire teams achievement.

With its fourth-place overall result, Level 5 was the highest-placed American Le Mans Series finisher. It was an even more impressive accomplishment considering the level of competition from the more powerful LMP1 category, which had 11 entries, including three factory Audis prototypes.

We did a lot of work, especially the mechanics, who worked through the night to get our car ready, Bouchut said. The car ran very well, so we’re very happy to win our class in the ALMS. That was the main target of the weekend. Of course, we’re a little disappointed to finish so close to the WEC car, but it was a good Saturday night show for the fans.

Next up for Level 5 is the Tequila Patrón American Le Mans Series at Long Beach, scheduled for April 13-14. The race will be broadcast live on ESPN 2 at 7:30 p.m. ET and will also be shown live on ESPN3.com or ALMS.com.
